"We design eyewear that celebrates the glorious diversity of faces and the uniqueness of individuals. The glasses we make are suggestive sparks that fly from our imagination. It is you who completes these thoughts and brings the dreams of l.a.Eyeworks into being."-- Barbara McReynolds & Gai Gherardi

40 years ago today, we unlocked the door of our shop on Melrose Avenue with little more than an idea to change the conversation about eyewear. Four decades later, it’s hard to describe how full, how forty-fied, we feel as we raise our glasses to thank you for your invaluable support. We would not have arrived at this auspicious moment, nor would our optical dreams have been as vibrant, without you. The gemstone for a fortieth anniversary is the ruby, a jewel that is loved for the deep fire that burns within its heart. As we stand at the threshold of a gleaming new decade, our love for great glasses and those like you who translate them to the world only burns brighter. With gratitude and good wishes,Barbara, Gai, Margo, Roband all the l.a.Eyeworkers
The celebration continues as we unveil a new collection of designs for Spring 2020

UPDATE: May 28, 2020
RE-OPENING AT L.A. EYEWORKS BEGINS WITH CAUTIOUS CARE
l.a.Eyeworks retail shops are at the heart of our optical universe and we are pleased to let you know that our two locations in Hollywood are moving into the future with a well-prepared and careful approach.
Whether you’re seeking options for remote styling, curbside pick up/drop off, personal in-store appointments, or eye examinations*, we’ve developed a variety of options designed to help you get your glasses groove back.
Taking into consideration a broad spectrum of public and ophthalmic health guidelines, we’ve developed and rehearsed a series of protocols aimed at protecting your well-being and safeguarding our incredible team of opticians.
WHAT WE’RE DOING TO KEEP YOU SAFEl.a.Eyeworks stores are open by appointment only. Please call or e-mail in advance of your visit. Entrance is limited to one person unless that person is a minor or requires physical assistance. Reducing access allows us to properly observe physical distancing guidelines and to keep our stores clean after each visit. The bonus for you is a calm, low-traffic environment with our undivided attention.
Although we pine for your presence, we strongly encourage remote options at this time. Ask us about contact-free alternatives for frame repairs, adjustments, and sampling new designs. Whether by phone, curbside drop off, e-mail or video chat, we love finding creative ways to work outside the stores.
If you would like an in-store appointment to select eyewear or for an optical exam, we require the following:
1. answer simple, pre-arrival screening questions and permit us to take your temperature upon arrival with a no-touch infrared thermometer (we’ll even take our own for you, too!)
2. sanitize your hands upon arrival (we also offer disposable gloves)
3. wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth at all times (disposable masks available, too)
4. observe physical distancing
5. All frames are disinfected prior to your arrival, augmented by a rigorous cleaning program for tables, seats, optical equipment, tools, countertops, etc., throughout the day.
WHAT WE’RE DOING TO PROTECT OUR TEAMOur staff are equipped with multiple protective options. You are likely to encounter your favorite optician with a new look, including a mask, a face shield, and gloves. As part of our protocols, opticians also have their temperatures taken every day upon arrival and are versed in best self-care practices in and outside the stores.
l.a.Eyeworks opticians are frontline care providers and they are empowered to make any judgments they deem necessary for your safety and theirs. Please be patient and kind with us. We’re all learning new steps to the dance together!

UPDATE: April 8, 2020
We continue to send our good wishes and concerned thoughts to all affected by the COVID crisis and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all healthcare and service workers for their truly heroic efforts. We have been very fortunate that our staff and immediate families remain healthy. Your notes of concern and good wishes have been deeply appreciated.
l.a.Eyeworks Retail Stores
Our retail locations on Melrose Avenue and Beverly Boulevard remain closed to the public until government and health authority guidelines allow us to return.
In the meantime, our entire optical team is available to assist you via phone and e-mail during regular business hours:
● 7407 Melrose Avenue, tel. (323) 653-8255, melrose@laeyeworks.com
● 7386 Beverly Boulevard, tel. (323) 931-7795, beverly@laeyeworks.com
Please don’t hesitate to contact us with your questions, wants and concerns.
Although our usual speedy processing is taking a little longer than usual, we have embraced the challenges of social distancing and tele-opticianry to provide styling advice, shipping of existing orders, shipping of try-on frames, sales of gift certificates, and crisis resolution for damaged frames and lenses whenever it is possible.
l.a.Eyeworks Wholesale Accounts
Although our wholesale teams in Los Angeles and Ornex, France, are working remotely for the most part, we are available to assist you with orders, payment processing and other inquiries via phone and e-mail during regular business hours:

Europe: eyemail@eyeworks.fr; (33) 4 50 40 73 73

UPDATE: March 16, 2020
Dear friends of l.a.Eyeworks,
In our previous notice a few short days ago, we promised to keep you up to date with our decisions regarding COVID-19. To insure the well-being of our staff and the city we love, please note:
* l.a.Eyeworks retail stores in Los Angeles at 7407 Melrose Avenue and 7386 Beverly Boulevard are closed, effective Monday, March 16, 2020. There will be no admission of visitors under any circumstance.
* We are anticipating at least two weeks of closure. We will e-mail a date of re-opening when we can set one with confidence. For now, we are focused on doing our part to mitigate transmission and flatten the curve of the infection rate.
* We will be responding to voicemails and e-mails as quickly as possible (see contact information below). We will also try to answer the phone when we can. We are working in a new mode so we kindly ask for your understanding and patience.
* While we’re apart, let’s develop our virtual vision together. In fact, let’s make it 20/20! Whether it’s by e-mail, text, or webcam, we’ll style an expert selection of new glasses for you. It seems likely the landscape will continue to evolve. We intend to roll with it and keep you up to date along the way. Although there may be some short-term disappointments as we focus on the greater, long-term good, we are committed to doing the very best we can for you in the interim.
We might be remote for now, but we are never far apart.
Be well, and be kind to one another.

l.a.Eyeworks | COVID-19 Response & Planning
Like you, l.a.Eyeworks is paying close attention to the evolving situation with the coronavirus, to the recommendations of health authorities, and to our own existing and enhanced level of care as eye health advocates and providers.
From the beginning, we have approached this event as a shared endeavor in which we must all care for ourselves and others with equal attention and respect. We have and will continue to make decisions that best protect our customers and insure the well-being of our staff.
IN THE PRESENT
As of this communication our two retail stores in Los Angeles are open for regular business hours (Monday – Saturday, 11am to 7pm).
We offer all of our customers a fleet of hand-sanitizing options upon arrival and we are engaged in vigilant cleaning of shared surfaces, equipment and eyeglasses. These practices have been in place at l.a.Eyeworks for some time but now they are amplified and made more visible.
We encourage all of our customers to follow guidelines prescribed by the CDC, WHO and others. If you are not feeling well or have been subject to other types of exposure, please do yourself and others a favor and save your visit for another day. Likewise, if you do not feel well and have an existing appointment, please contact us to reschedule.
As we navigate the challenges ahead, please let us know how we can creatively interact with you. Would you feel more comfortable making a scheduled in-store appointment with your favorite optician? Would you like to find a way to work remotely to find new pair of amazing glasses? Call or e-mail us! Contact information follows below.

Original, often iconoclastic, and always invigorating, eyeglasses designed by l.a.Eyeworks are immediately recognized for their bold shapes, imaginative handling of materials, and expressive use of color. Working from deep intuition, McReynolds and Gherardi begin each of their limited-edition designs with a hand-drawn sketch, the first step on a path of meticulous production where the finest materials are shaped by a combination of technology and hand-finished crafting. Every aspect of an eyeglass frame's shaping and construction has at one time or another been re-thought and re-invented as part of the designers' restless imaginations. The result is an expanding legacy of glasses that balances innovation with wearability, walking a fine line between optical tradition and a redefining expression of the "now." Although l.a.Eyeworks have graced the faces of celebrities, performers, artists, and athletes, the deeper intention is for you to find a frame that conforms to no fashion sensibility but your own.

In addition to groundbreaking eyewear designs, l.a.Eyeworks has made an indelible stamp on the look and language of what an eyewear company can be. From streamlined architectural spaces to the cases that protect the frames, no detail is left untouched as a subject for creative investigation. Retail store windows, for example, are a messaging platform to invoke conversations about vision, culture, social equality, freedom of expression, and sometimes, the power of a really good pun. An abiding love for artists has been the genesis for an ongoing series of in-store exhibitions, event programming, and commissioned works, including a series of artist-designed cleaning cloths. Since 1981, the brand's signature portrait ad campaign, photographed by Greg Gorman, has featured an eclectic mix of more than 200 high-profile celebrities and lesser-known cultural provocateurs in an ever-evolving series of stunning black-and-white images, anchored by the legendary tagline,
A face is like a work of art. It deserves a great frame.

"We design eyewear to celebrate the diversity of faces and the uniqueness of individuals. The glasses we make are sparks of our imagination. You complete these thoughts and bring the dreams of l.a.Eyeworks into being."-- Barbara McReynolds & Gai Gherardi

l.a.Eyeworks frames are designed in Los Angeles by the co-founders and co-owners of the company, Barbara McReynolds and Gai Gherardi. Collections are produced in limited edition quantities, which allows us to make more creative shapes with imaginative colors and innovative surface treatments. Because McReynolds and Gherardi were both seasoned opticians before they began designing eyewear, l.a.Eyeworks frames demonstrate great understanding of facial proportions and the principles of making a comfortably fitting frame that can accommodate a wide range of prescriptions.
l.a.Eyeworks glasses are made of fine acetate and metal materials. The frames are manufactured in artisanal factories in Italy and Japan that combine the use of advanced technology (e.g., computer-aided sculpting ) with the warmth and finesse of hand-finishing. It's worth noting that even the color of temple tips are hand-chosen to complement the custom colors of our metal frames.
New collections are introduced in the fall and spring of every year, with occasional smaller mid-season introductions. To be notified of new frame offerings, please sign up to receive our newsletter here.

To clean your frame, whether it is metal or plastic, a gentle rinse in water with a mild soap is fine for normal care. Dry your frames with a soft, non-abrasive cloth (for example, the microfiber cleaning cloth included with the purchase of your l.a.Eyeworks frame). We do not recommend cleaning your frames with solvent-based detergents such as window cleaning solutions. Protect your frames from extreme temperatures, such as leaving them in a car in summertime (even the glove box can get hot!), and store them in a protective case when not in use. To keep your frames in optimal adjustment, take them off with both hands. And if you have a tough cleaning job, or if your frame is sitting unevenly on your face, make a visit to your optician for advice and a tune-up.

l.a.Eyeworks Acetates
The use of different types of acetates allows l.a.Eyeworks to achieve a vast range of styles, colors, and designs. By integrating each different acetate's inherent best qualities into each different frame design, l.a.Eyeworks’ co-founders and co-designers Barbara McReynolds and Gai Gherardi are able to create the most diverse and stylistically celebrated collections possible. The three main types of acetates in the l.a.Eyeworks Collection are Acetate (Standard Acetate), HD Acetate (High-Density Acetate), and KM Acetate (KRYMIX 93 Acetate).
The most notable differences in l.a.Eyeworks acetate frame designs include; Acetate being a cost-effective material has less color variations and tends to lose some of its natural rigidity and therefore overall strength through the years requiring the need for more maintenance by your optometrist, though Acetate still remains the best choice for braver designs as the integrity of the material is great for shaping and creating thin contour lines. HD Acetate on the other hand, is more expensive offering lush color variations as well as a longer life-span and little or no need for maintenance, with the caveat being its highly-composed materiality can cause it to become brittle in the shaping process and therefore limits the overall thinness of dimensionality in the final production frames as well as limits the overall frame's design variability. KM Acetate is more expensive than both Acetate and HD Acetate, though this material makes the most of Acetate's shaping malleabilities as well as HD Acetate's colors and longer life span.
So in an eyewear design nutshell, each different type of acetate has its natural strengths and weaknesses and therefore a good designer must know when to use each of these acetates with the proper handling in mind. This designer intuition is where Barbara McReynolds and Gai Gherardi excel at discovering new and exciting combinations, not only with acetates, also with the integration of other materials such as Titanium, used in tandem as inserts and/or combinations to enhance the overall beauty and elegance of each l.a.Eyeworks frame.
When choosing your l.a.Eyeworks frame, be assured the design and material are purposefully and meticulously chosen to create the best frame possible and to also create the best eyewear experience for you in mind.
If you have any questions regarding the types of acetate and your personal needs for eyewear lifestyles, please call directly to the l.a.Eyeworks customer service at 1-800-348-3337, or call an l.a.Eyeworks store at 323-653-8255 for l.a.Eyeworks on Melrose Ave or 323-931-7795 for l.a.Eyeworks on Beverly Blvd, both stores are located in Los Angeles, California.

Day With(out) Art | World AIDS Day
On Saturday, December 1st, l.a.Eyeworks joins arts, community, and health organizations worldwide in its 29th annual observance of Day With(out) Art / World AIDS Day. Special initiatives are being presented at both namesake retail stores in Los Angeles, including a Playlist Project in which friends from the arts, entertainment, fashion and services communities are invited to suggest a musical selection to be played in the stores throughout the day. The song selections can be seen HERE or enjoyed as an audio playlist HERE.
This year's group of more than 60 contributors includes actress Kirsten Vangsness (CBS' Criminal Minds), recording artist/producer Sam Sparro, renowned L.A. chef Jessica Koslow, MAC celebrity makeup artist Gregory Arlt, and architect Neil Denari, among many visual artists, educators and cultural leaders. Song selections are played randomly throughout the day, with classical works playing alongside disco standards, folk gems, and indie tracks, creating revealing contrasts and discoveries.
Additionally, visitors are also offered red ribbons as part of The Ribbon Project, conceived by the Visual AIDS Artists Caucus in 1991. On the sidewalk in front of each store, a "votive station" is created where visitors and passersby could light incense as an act of remembrance and an expression of hope.

l.a.Eyeworks is thrilled to announce that the DUBLIN frame has been nominated for the prestigious Silmo d’Or Award in the category “Optical Frame Design.” The winner will be announced in Paris on Saturday, October 7 at a gala to honor the 50th anniversary of the Silmo optical exhibition, which takes place October 6-9, 2017.
A chic and vigorous statement, the DUBLIN frame reflects our passion for bold shaping, artisanal construction, and provocative color. Handcrafted in Italy from fine acetates, the design’s angular outer silhouette is complemented by softer, curving inserts that surround the lenses. Fitted together, these elements build sculptural dimension with dynamic pairings of lush patterns and vibrant color. See more of DUBLIN here.

From music to murals to social activism, l.a.Eyeworks unveils a new series of Uncensored Visions portraits by photographer Josef Jasso that celebrates six Los Angelenos with diverse creative trajectories. “My goal was to celebrate the faces of artists and to honor the inspiration and power of their work.” notes Jasso. “Each subject was photographed in a space that has special significance to their creative process, surrounded by the tools they use to express themselves.”
Featuring selections from l.a.Eyeworks' most recent eyewear designs, the series includes ceramic artist Ben Medansky, burlesque performer Miss Tosh, muralist Robert Vargas, sustainable living advocate Renee Gunter, painter Nina Palomba, and musician/activist Madame Gandhi.
“It’s thrilling to bring these unique individuals together in one series,” adds Jasso, “because it describes the dynamic breadth of the creative landscape of Los Angeles.”

Wearing the DUBLIN frame, Los Angeles-based visual artist Betye Saar is the new subject of l.a.Eyeworks’ portrait campaign, photographed by Greg Gorman.
With a prolific career now spanning more than five decades, Betye Saar’s artwork encompasses diverse media, including assemblage, sculpture, collage and installation. These works are frequently charged with incisive social and political allegory while also delving into more ephemeral realms of personal memory, identity, and spiritual symbolism.
The enduring spirit and vision of this vibrant 90-year-old artist is reflected in numerous recent solo and group exhibitions at prestigious arts institutions including the Fondazione Prada (Milan), the Brooklyn Museum, and forthcoming exhibitions at the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum and the Tate Modern (London).

On Thursday, December 1st, l.a.Eyeworks joins arts, community, and health organizations worldwide in its 27th annual observance of Day With(out) Art / World AIDS Day. Special initiatives are presented at both namesake retail stores in Los Angeles, including a Playlist Project in which friends from the arts, entertainment, fashion and services communities are invited to suggest a musical selection to be played in the stores throughout the day. The song selections can be seen here or enjoyed as a video compilation on YouTube.
This year's group of more than 60 contributors includes actress Kirsten Vangsness (CBS' Criminal Minds), Advanced Style founder Ari Seth Cohen, fashion designer Peter Jensen, E! entertainment editor Marc Malkin, artist Jim Isermann, and chanteuse Morganne, among many visual artists, educators and cultural leaders.
On the sidewalk in front of each store, a "votive station" was created where visitors and passersby could light incense as an act of remembrance and an expression of hope.

l.a.Eyeworks’ Uncensored Visions photo series travels to Portland, Oregon, where photographer Christopher Dibble offers his interpretation of several recent designs, including Innski, Krupa, Ahi, Donut and Dutchie. A makeup artist, a dancer, and a style editor are just a few of Dibble’s subjects who reflect the diverse energy fueling the creative scene in Portland. When asked about his approach to the shoot, Dibble reflected, “I chose bold backgrounds both to complement the incredible color of the frames and as a sort of homage to l.a.Eyeworks’ famous portrait ads that were so influential to me.” An l.a.Eyeworks wearer himself, Dibble added that to him the ethos of the brand is about “the spirit of art, excitement, individuality. The idea of style over fashion. l.a.Eyeworks always puts it ALL out there, unapologetically.”

Since 1988, l.a.Eyeworks has commissioned world-renowned artists, jewelers, and designers to augment, embellish, and transform our iconic frame designs as one-of-a-kind artworks, known collectively as the Face It! Collection. These unique and often outrageous creations have dazzled spectators in exhibitions worldwide.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of legendary eye care specialists St. Charles Vision in New Orleans, an exhibition of 29 works from the Face It! collection will be exhibited at the Lighthouse Gallery this weekend. In addition to works by jeweler Vicky Ambery-Smith, artist Joyce Scott, costume designer David Spada, and artist James Reva, the presentation will feature multiple works by New Orleans’ luminary jeweler Thomas Mann, including two new works commissioned for the occasion. Click through the slideshow above to see just a few of the highlights.
The Face It! exhibition is part Art for Arts’ Sake, an annual celebration of New Orleans’ finest contemporary art, organized by the Contemporary Arts Center. See special news coverage of the project on New Orleans’ WWL-TV here.

Two luminaries of West Coast eyewear design—l.a.Eyeworks and Blake Kuwahara—have merged their talents to create a beautifully crafted, limited edition capsule collection. Comprised of two frame designs named Two Noons and Two Rays, each model is handcrafted in Japan in four distinct acetate combinations. The capsule collection, produced in an extremely limited edition of 100 sets total, will be made for a very select array of optical boutiques worldwide with delivery beginning in May 2016.
The synergy of the collaboration sparks from Kuwahara's extensive knowledge of luxury eyewear design and production, combined with l.a.Eyeworks' expanding legacy of iconic, imaginative frame shapes and passion for color. Employing advanced production techniques created by Kuwahara, the frame designs feature an iconic l.a.Eyeworks silhouette set within the contours of a complementary outer form. "We set out to distill and combine the essence of both of our brands as an adventure in optical alchemy," says Gai Gherardi, who co-founded and co-designs l.a.Eyeworks with Barbara McReynolds.
Each frame will be accompanied by a custom protective case and a bespoke "mashup" cleaning cloth. A portion of the sale of each frame will benefit Las Familias del Pueblo and the work of Alice Callaghan on behalf of underserved populations in the historic core of Los Angeles.

At London Fashion Week, a bespoke capsule of l.a.Eyeworks frames punctuated the presentation of designer Peter Jensen’s women’s wear collection for Spring 2016. A cult favorite among fashion cognoscenti, the U.K.-based Jensen chose noted Los Angeles stylist/costume designer Shirley Kurata as the muse for his playful, idiosyncratic proposals. Each model in his “army of Shirley’s” was styled with frames based on Kurata’s personal eyeglasses: a vintage “Montrose” designed by Barbara McReynolds and Gai Gherardi for l.a.Eyeworks. Splashing across the l.a.Eyeworks universe is a vibrant new series of Uncensored Visions campaign portraits highlighting the brand's newest eyewear designs. Inspired, perhaps, by the l.a.Eyeworks tagline "A face is like a work of art . . ," photographer Josef Jasso approached Irish artist Derick Smith with a proposal that Smith's paintings create the visual environments for the new portrait series. Jasso, whose previous images for l.a.Eyeworks have included sensational portraits of Elvira, James St. James, and Rose McGowan, said of the partnership: " Derick Smith’s paintings are so alive with color and movement, they're like skipping instead of walking. Instant joy. Likewise, l.a.Eyeworks frames are incredible pieces of art on their own, but they really do come to life on the face. With this series I wanted to capture both ends of the art experience—to showcase the work as well as the reaction that looking at, and wearing, something so alive can bring. It's me returning the favor back to the art."

As director Tim Burton's film Big Eyes nears its theatrical release on December 25, the moment seemed just right to visit one of the more unique chapters in the history of the l.a.Eyeworks portrait ad campaign.
In July 2000, to celebrate the opening of the exhibition "Margaret Keane and Keanabilia" at the Laguna Art Museum, l.a.Eyeworks' signature portrait campaign made its first-ever departure from Greg Gorman's stunning black-and-white photographic portraits to a 2-D illustration. The face was Margaret Keane's famed 1962 painting of a young woman entitled "Escape," digitally accessorized with a "Pan" frame design by l.a.Eyeworks.
The survey exhibition, sponsored in part by l.a.Eyeworks, marked the troubled but triumphant journey of Margaret Keane from ghost painter (hidden for years behind her then-husband Walter, who publicly claimed credit for the beloved paintings) to prevailing in a 14-year legal battle to establish herself as the true creator of the famed eyes.
